Understanding the Four Sections of the Test
The TOEFL iBT is a single, integrated test that takes just under 3 hours to complete. It is divided into four sections:
1. Reading (35 minutes)
You will read 2 academic passages and answer questions about them. The passages are similar to what you would find in a university textbook.
-
Our Tip: Practice skimming the passages first to understand the main idea before you read for details to answer the questions.
2. Listening (36 minutes)
You will listen to recordings of lectures and conversations that take place on a university campus and then answer questions about what you heard.
-
Our Tip: Take good notes while you listen! You can use these notes to help you answer the questions accurately.
3. Speaking (16 minutes)
You will speak into a microphone to answer 4 questions. Some questions will be about your own ideas, while others will require you to read a short passage and listen to a recording first.
-
Our Tip: Speak clearly and structure your answers. Start with a main point and then provide supporting details.
4. Writing (29 minutes)
You will complete two writing tasks.
-
Integrated Writing Task: You will read a short passage, listen to a short lecture, and then write a summary of what you read and heard.
-
Independent Writing Task: You will write an essay based on your own knowledge and experience in response to a specific question.
-
Our Tip: For the integrated task, focus on how the lecture relates to the reading passage. For the essay, make sure you have a clear opinion and support it with good examples.
How is the TOEFL iBT® Scored?
Each of the four sections is scored on a scale from 0 to 30. These scores are then added together for a total score on a scale from 0 to 120.
