Understanding the PTE Academic Test

PTE Academic is a single, integrated test taken in one sitting. It lasts approximately 2 hours, and it assesses your speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills.

The test is divided into three main parts:

Part 1: Speaking & Writing (54-67 minutes)

This section is the longest and combines your ability to speak and write in English. You'll encounter various question types, including:

  • Personal Introduction: A short, ungraded recording about yourself.

  • Read Aloud: Read text displayed on the screen.

  • Repeat Sentence: Listen to a sentence and repeat it exactly.

  • Describe Image: Describe an image (like a graph or picture) in detail.

  • Re-tell Lecture: Listen to a lecture and then summarize it in your own words.

  • Answer Short Question: Answer a simple question with a few words.

  • Summarize Written Text: Read a passage and write a one-sentence summary.

  • Write Essay: Write a 200-300 word essay on a given topic.

  • Our Tip: Speak clearly and at a natural pace. For writing, pay attention to grammar, spelling, and sentence structure.

Part 2: Reading (29-30 minutes)

This section tests your reading comprehension through a variety of tasks:

  • Fill in the Blanks (Reading & Writing): Choose the correct words to complete a text.

  • Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers: Select all correct answers from a list.

  • Re-order Paragraphs: Put jumbled sentences back into the correct order.

  • Fill in the Blanks (Reading): Drag and drop words to complete a text.

  • Multiple Choice, Single Answer: Select one correct answer from a list.

  • Our Tip: Time management is crucial! Scan for keywords and main ideas before diving into details.

Part 3: Listening (30-43 minutes)

The final section evaluates your ability to understand spoken English. You'll listen to recordings and answer questions.

  • Summarize Spoken Text: Listen to a short lecture and write a 50-70 word summary.

  • Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers: Select all correct answers based on a recording.

  • Fill in the Blanks: Type the missing words as you listen to an audio.

  • Highlight Correct Summary: Choose the best summary from options after listening.

  • Multiple Choice, Single Answer: Select one correct answer from a list.

  • Select Missing Word: Listen to an audio, and select the missing word that completes it.

  • Highlight Incorrect Words: Identify words in a transcript that differ from the audio.

  • Write from Dictation: Listen to a sentence and type it exactly.

  • Our Tip: Take notes while listening, especially for details and keywords.

How is PTE Academic Scored?

PTE Academic provides an overall score from $10 to $90. You also receive scores for each of the four main communication skills (listening, reading, speaking, writing) and for sub-skills (like grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation).

The scoring is entirely automated, ensuring fairness and consistency. There's no pass or fail; the score you need depends on the requirements of the institution or immigration authority you are applying to.
